Home Theater Subwoofers

16 April 2010 No Comment

The suspense, danger and intensity of the film being watched will not be as dramatic if it were not for the home theater subwoofers. These are speakers that give the strength of the events being shown on home theaters. This is the sound that gets your gut.

The role that subwoofers play in the sound production of a home theater system can not be over stressed. In fact, an entire book could be written about it and still come out lacking. So important are these speakers to the system that manufacturers have developed the home theater subwoofer to a point where it can produce a sound wave down to 5 Hz. Now 5 Hz. is no longer audible but the frequency is strong enough that the body could feel it.

Compared with the other speakers in the entertainment system that gives off tinny sounds, home theater subwoofers provide us with the low frequency deep bass sound that gives life to the action or could do or undo our enjoyment of a movie soundtrack. Home theater subwoofers are designed primarily to reproduce only the lowest possible frequencies and are omni-directional.

The sound which a subwoofer puts out travels in all directions, but resonance is frequently affected by the size of the room and its acoustic properties. Changing the positioning of the subwoofer will create different results. On the other hand, the speakers in a 5.1 home theater system will placed in a more permanent location. It is possible that you may have to continue changing the locations to find out which produces the best possible sound.

There are two ways to set up your subwoofer for your home theater system. You can either have it powered passively in either down firing or front firing. It really depends on the volume of the room you are setting it up in and how loud you need it to be.

Some home theater subwoofers are passive. This means that much like other speakers you’ve encountered, the power supply is supplied from the amplifier. Passive home theater subwoofers may require a higher powered amplifier to keep up with the power drain needed by the subwoofer to produce low frequency sounds.

Depending on the size of the room where the home theater will be placed or if you can handle more amounts of bass, you may be better off with the active sub woofer. Home theater sub-woofers that are active or powered are self amplified. An added benefit of this configuration is that the amplifier receiver could easily supply the power that the other five speakers require.
